BUENA VISTA, Va. The Radford Highlanders put up a tremendous fight in the first half of the game, keeping the Knights out of the end zone until that last four minutes of the 2nd quarter. Despite Radford keeping SVU to just 8 plays in the first quarter, the Highlanders’ offense also struggled to put points on the board.
The Highlanders would go into halftime down 16 to 0 and would not score until the final minutes of the game, when corner back Jared Pugh recovered a fumble and ran it back 71 yards for the score. By then however, the game had been sealed with SVU already up 44 points.
The Knights’ quarterback Zack Garner led their offense with 105 total passing yards, exploding past Radford’s defense in the second half. The SVU defense also had a good night, keeping the highlanders to just 60-total offensive yards.
Despite a tough night for Radford, the Highlander’s defense gave a heroic effort in their attempts to stop the high-powered SVU offense. Veterans Jared Pugh and Michael Massey led the team in tackles while the defense got more sacks than the SVU Knights. Although the team struggled in many areas of the game that night, the Radford Coaches still saw a great deal of potential in both the defensive and offensive units.
The Highlanders will now prepare to host the Southern Tech Wildcats, whom they are set to play on September the 11th at 4pm.

Agility, blocking, passing, catching, pass defending and ball carrying were just a few of the drills that were taught to the kids at camp.
Although this camp was a rewarding experience for the RU football players, it also gave them a chance to mingle with the already loyal and supportive community of Radford City. With the youth football camp finished, the RU football team will now prepare for their own training camp, set to start on August 16th.

The event featured a night of buffet-style food, drinks and the appearance of Michael Vick who later signed autographs for fans that previously purchased exclusive tickets for Opening Night.

Spending the night in VIP, Nick Schrank and fellow teammate JeRome Mann, were able to talk with Michael Vick briefly. "It was just a hi...goodbye...and here's a NICKSCHRANK.COM shirt for ya! But I really enjoyed getting to meet him and I hope somewhere down the road I'll get to do it again," said Nick. There in VIP, Nick, with the help of Manager Collin White, was able to establish some valuable connections with football as well as lock up future collaborations with Restaurant Seven’s owners on designs for Michael Vick’s anticipated appearances in the spring to Restaurant Seven.

The Grand Opening of Restaurant Seven proved to be a very valuable experience for Nick Schrank as he was able to mix and mingle with the National Football League’s finest. Andre Kendrick, Virginia Tech running back and standout in the 2000 Sugar Bowl versus Florida State as well as close friend to Michael Vick, sported a NICKSCHRANK.COM T-shirt and even gave a shout out on camera to the website. Michael Vick grabbed a .COM shirt right before heading out the door and appreciated the fact that someone had something to give him for a change.

See NICKSCHRANK.COM Press Release Version

Miami, FL. – Sunday, November 15, 2009, Radford University’s Nick Schrank earned the NAFL East Coast MVP Award after his stellar performance in the NAFL All-Star Game. Only three other players in the nation, each coming from North, East, South and West divisions, received this great honor.

After an astounding performance at Outside Linebacker for the East Coast All-Stars, Nick Schrank ended the night with a total of eight solo tackles, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and a bone-crushing sack, placing him at the top of the list for receiving the MVP award. Fellow Radford University teammate, Jeremy Sturgill put on an amazing show at the defensive tackle position for the East Coast squad as well. Due to a dislocated shoulder late in the third quarter, Jeremy Sturgill was put out of contention for the East’s MVP, but up until that time, he was nipping at the heels of Nick Schrank for the MVP spotlight.

Nick Schrank spent his time at outside linebacker for the All-Star game, playing with teammates hailing from all over the original thirteen colonies. Unfortunately, the North defeated the East Coast 24-21, with the winning touchdown coming late in the fourth quarter, but the entire game showcased the talents of both teams and was highly entertaining with big plays on both sides of the ball.

Jeremy Sturgill, fellow Radford University undergraduate, proved to wreak havoc on the defensive line against the Northern All-Stars. With an incredible second quarter pass deflection, Jeremy Sturgill single-handedly stopped the heavy momentum that the North was establishing in their offensive drive towards the East’s end zone. The pass deflection forced the North to punt, shifting the controls to the East’s offense, ultimately leading to their second score.

This year’s NAFL All-Star and Championship weekend was held in Miami, Florida. The weekend was full of festivities including the NAFL National Championship game on Saturday, November 14, 2009. The All-Star games of East versus North and West versus South followed on Sunday.

Old Town Athletic Club and The Parisi Speed School sponsored Nick Schrank’s travel for the All-Star weekend.

Nick Schrank is currently training for NFL pro-days with Liberty University in the spring of 2010. Collin White, Nick Schrank’s representative will be arranging a number of professional tryouts with Arena Leagues in the coming months.

Additional Information on the NAFL

Dublin, VA - Saturday, November 2, 2009 at 2:00 p.m., Radford University hosted the George Mason University Patriots from Fairfax, VA. Pregame started with the commemoration of Radford's inaugural 2008 season. The beginning of the Tradition was celebrated as well as reaffirmed that it is NOW.

Tradition. Is. NOW. was echoed by the announcer before the start of the game, and as Radford kicker, Matt Broomel booted one inside the 5, the battle was quickly under way.

Having never beaten the established rival opponent, Radford came in to the game looking to make a statement that this year...things were going to be different. As George Mason chose to receive with winning of the opening coin toss, they began the game with endzone hopes. Those hopes were quickly demolished with Outside Linebacker, Eric Zimmett's interception from a shallow slant route off the number 2 receiver for Mason. Zimmett returned the pick for 6, establishing a quick lead for the Highlanders.

After Eric Zimmett stole the little momentum that Mason had, it was all she wrote for Mason from there on out. Radford's offense, led by Quarterback, Mike Massey, and Wide Out, Vittorian 'Tree' Devlin, slowly but surely put the nail in the coffin, burying all hopes of a comeback for the Patriots. Two big hookups between Massey and Tree, resulting in a TD both times, proved to be quite the crowd-pleaser as Tree "prime-timed" it in to the endzone.

As for the Radford defense, Free Safety, Jacob Nichols, shined as usual, while Mark McCoy Jr. dominated the secondary with 2 interceptions, one resulting in 65-yard TD return. Captain, Matt Bales, Defensive End, Sam Dietze, Tackles, Jeremy Sturgill and Justin Coulter walled off any dreams of Mason having a running game. Outside Linebacker, Steve Schrank collapsed the edge game for any option or pitches that the Patriots attempted to run, and Middle Linebacker, Nick Schrank, returned for Radford after recent tryouts with Virginia Arena Teams, Richmond Revolution and Richmond Raiders.

The 31-7 victory for Radford marks a 4-4 season heading in to the final game which will be at The University of South Carolina. The Gamecocks will host the Highlanders on November 14, 2009.

Buena Vista, VA - Even though it was Halloween and pulling all tricks out of the bag, Radford was unable to snuff out the Southern Virginia University Knights in Buena Vista for their Senior Day.

Celebrating the careers of nine SVU players Saturday, October 31, 2009 in Buena Vista, Radford hoped to give the Knights a run for their money, but the leading seniors of SVU weren't going to let that happen.

Short field position allowed for SVU to capitalize multiple times in the redzone, and Radford was unable to keep it tight past the second quarter. Strong performances by Steve Schrank, Outside Linebacker, and Captain, Matt Bales, made it possible to keep the game as close as it was.

Another strong performance by Quarterback, Mike Massey, connecting with Wide-out, Vittorian 'Tree' Devlin, for two TD's and over 100 yards passing led the Highlander offense. Fullback, Jeremy Sturgill punched in 6 points in the 4th quarter after a powerful 20-yard rush from mid-field.

"It was a sloppy game overall, both sides of the ball didn't work as well as we have in the past," stated Captain, Matt Bales.

The 40-20 victory for SVU pushed Radford to 3-4 on the season, with Radford to host George Mason University at home on November 7, 2009.

More stats and information from the SVU game can be found at the SVU Football Site.

Go To SVU Football

Along with 4 of his Summer League teammates from the VA Crimson Cardinals, the workouts consisted of position specific drills, the 40-yard dash, vertical jump, 225 bench press max and the broad jump.

After a strenuous 2 hour session with the Richmond Revolution, the Revolution coaching staff expressed a heavy interest in all the players sent by Manager Collin White from the VA Crimson Cardinal team.

Hopes for a contract offering and an invited roster spot for the 2010 spring season are what Nick Schrank is praying for. "It was definitely a very good experience for me to be able to grow and learn about the workings of professional football," stated Schrank.

Nick Schrank was able to talk closely with the Head Coach of the Revolution, Steve Criswell, and hand him his media kit of previous game and workout film. It proved to make a real impact with Criswell, leaving a lasting impression of Nick at the end of the day.

Nick's teammates, Pierre Penn, JeRome Mann, Curtis Middleton and Fred Wilson shined above the competition. All stood out individually in various assessments such as the 40-yard dash where JeRome Mann recorded a 4.4 sec time, while Pierre Penn maxed out the 225 bench press competition against all the Defensive Backs of the day.

In summary, the VA Crimson Cardinal 'Bird Gang' flew over the competition of Sunday's arena tryouts, and the future is only looking brighter for these young athletes entering the beginning of their professional careers.

From The Roanoke Times

Radford club football team to face SVU
College Notebook

By Doug Doughty | The Roanoke Times

No college football game could be harder to handicap than Saturday's matchup in Buena Vista between host Southern Virginia and Radford.

Radford (3-3) has a club team whose opponents to date have included an online university, Columbia Southern, as well as the Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

Southern Virginia (1-7), an independent NAIA team, has an upcoming game with Webber International but already has faced a couple of Division I-AA foes in Morehead State and Gardner-Webb.

Southern Virginia's lone victory has come over the other club team on its schedule, George Mason. A homecoming crowd watched Southern Virginia roll to a 51-12 victory at the Parry McCluer High School field that it calls home.

"Radford is much better than George Mason," Southern Virginia coach DeLane Fitzgerald said. "They're going to play two weeks from now, and I think you'll see that."

Shortly after he was elevated to the head-coaching job Feb. 9, Fitzgerald contacted Radford's club team about a game this season. The Highlanders were 0-6 last season in their first year of club football.

"Are we favored?" Fitzgerald said. "Yeah, we should be favored this week. Can they beat us? Absolutely. I don't think there's any doubt they can come in here and beat us.

"Radford's got some kids on their team that I think I'd enjoy coaching."

Radford's club team is not affiliated with the Highlanders' athletic program and must go through the same process for funding that other clubs do. Radford athletic director Robert Lineburg said he has not been a party to any discussions about a possible intercollegiate football program.

"It's not something that I would rule out," Lineburg said, "but, it's such a monumental undertaking."

The president of the Radford football club is Jeremy Sturgill, a two-way All-Three Rivers District selection who played for Lineburg's father at Radford High School.

Sturgill plays nose tackle and a little fullback for the Radford team and also helped set up a schedule that includes club teams from the University of North Carolina and South Carolina. North Carolina defeated Radford 2-0 at Henry Stadium in Chapel Hill.

"That's the field where they play field hockey," said Sturgill, who aspires to a career in sports administration. "Playing football with all those field-hockey lines out there, now that was a little different!"

Sophomore Quarterback, Mike Massey, H-Back/Versatility Player, Bryce Lapaglia, and Wide Out, Vittorian 'Tree' Devlin, paved the way for the offense the entire game. With room to breathe on offense, the Radford defense rained havoc on the Wildcats up and down the field. A 4th Quarter interception by Strong Safety, Jacob Nichols, clinched the 19-16 win with 2 minutes left in the game.

The Wildcat homecoming game was one of the best games a spectator could possibly watch. The stadium entertainment, the food, and the on-field competition made for a Sunday afternoon that no one wanted to miss. By far one of the most athletic games in Radford's history, both the offense and defense gelled together for a very solid performance which ultimately led to the win.

This marks Radford's second win in a row after dominating last week's opponent, Walter Reed Medical College, up in Washington D.C.

Defensive STANDOUTS for the Southern Tech/Radford game: Justin Coulter, Eric Zimmet, Captain, Matt Bales, Steve Schrank, Mark McCoy Jr., Mike Barta, Jacob Nichols, Jeremy Sturgill as well as the remaining havoc-raising Highlanders.

Morgan Moses, a versatile offensive lineman for Fork Union proved to be a tough opponent against Radford's defense.
Just this past week, George Mason University athletic officials sent an email to the Radford University Football office requesting an indefinite cancellation of the April 25th Spring Game. The Spring Game that was to be hosted by George Mason was cancelled according to GMU officials because of excessive injuries on the Mason football roster. The amount of injured players would prohibit Mason from competing in the Spring Game.
Due to player eligibility issues with Southern Virginia University and the NAIA that SVU is associated with, the Radford vs. SVU spring game is forced to be cancelled. This is an unfortunate happening, but Radford must respect the player eligibility of SVU, and Radford would not want to disrupt the future of SVU's fall season over spring scrimmage that ultimately does not get recorded in the books. Radford University football wishes all the best for SVU and its football program. We look forward to playing them in the future, and may their Fall 2009 season be a productive one.

Heading in to the second week of spring minicamp, the Radford football squad looks strong. Newly recruited talent such as Outside Linebacker Steve Schrank, a George Mason University transfer, will definitely add to the already tenacious defense under Defensive Coordinator Gary Dillon. New offensive coordinator, Bobby Baker, has started to install his football methodologies in to first year quarterback Austin Dangerfield. The second week of camp will be a true testament to the will power of the offense as the first day of full-contact will be Tuesday March 24th, 2009. The defense looks strong, not to say that there aren't some kinks to work out in the secondary, but all will fall in to place when it comes time.

The team adapted well, and a productive night of learning and conditioning helped to set the tone for the first week of spring minicamp. The following days of practice were able to be held outdoors on the regular facilities. Helmets and cleats were the attire for the rest of the week. Practice consisted of countless offensive and defensive reps, putting in place new ideas and concepts for the 2009 season. The defense looks strong so far, and the offense has been given the gift of newly recruited linemen that look to be promising for the upcoming year.
