Radford Falls to SVU

BUENA VISTA, Va
The Radford Highlanders put up a tremendous fight in the first half of the game, keeping the Knights out of the end zone until that last four minutes of the 2nd quarter. Despite Radford keeping SVU to just 8 plays in the first quarter, the Highlanders’ offense also struggled to put points on the board. The Highlanders would go into halftime down 16 to 0 and would not score until the final minutes of the game, when corner back Jared Pugh recovered a fumble and ran it back 71 yards for the score. By then however, the game had been sealed with SVU already up 44 points. The Knights’ quarterback Zack Garner led their offense with 105 total passing yards, exploding past Radford’s defense in the second half. The SVU defense also had a good night, keeping the highlanders to just 60-total offensive yards.
Despite a tough night for Radford, the Highlander’s defense gave a heroic effort in their attempts to stop the high-powered SVU offense. Veterans Jared Pugh and Michael Massey led the team in tackles while the defense got more sacks than the SVU Knights. Although the team struggled in many areas of the game that night, the Radford Coaches still saw a great deal of potential in both the defensive and offensive units.
The Highlanders will now prepare to host the Southern Tech Wildcats, whom they are set to play on September the 11th at 4pm

2010 Youth Football Camp

Radford, Va
Coaches and Players of The Radford University Club Football Team helped host the 2010 summer youth football camp in Radford Virginia. RU football players helped teach about 60 kids, between the ages of 7 and 12, the basic fundamentals of each position. The camp was hosted at McHarg Elementary School and lasted for four days, starting on Monday, August 9th and ending on Thursday, August 12th. Agility, blocking, passing, catching, pass defending and ball carrying were just a few of the drills that were taught to the kids at camp.
Although this camp was a rewarding experience for the RU football players, it also gave them a chance to mingle with the already loyal and supportive community of Radford City. With the youth football camp finished, the RU football team will now prepare for their own training camp, set to start on August 16th.

2010 Spring Camp

Beuna Vista, Va
The Football Club at Radford University traveled to Beuna Vista, Virginia on Saturday, April 17th, to compete in a Spring Game against Southern Virginia University. It was a good chance for both teams to look at what talent they have coming in next season and for Radford to see some of the Seniors off. Matt Bales, Jared Pugh, Justin Coulter, and Mike Massey were chosen as Captains for the game. Although SVU's Offense covered a lot of yards there were many good signs of talent coming out of Radford. Radford's Brian Sowers and Steve Schrank had very good games at linebacker. Corners Alex Pham and Jared Pugh showed to be working hard on their footwork and coverage. Radford's offense saw many new faces but was still lead by veteran quaterback Mike Massey and Linemen Tim Senter, Chris Girardi, Tom Robinson, and Fred Raines. New additions to the team included Wide reciever Jon Webb and back up Qb Jon Bardon. Look out for more news to come and your 2010 Season updates.
